Truth Or Dare is the new single by Southampton Four Piece The City Calls. This is my first time listening to the band and I have to say its fits very well into the realms of the Pop Punk genre.

The song starts with a catchy riff before the drums come crashing in and some nimble bass playing, the vocals start and the song deals with a failing relationship, the singer Lucas telling the girl in question that no matter how shes treats him, he will never give up and she will be the one crawling back to him. Around the two minute mark, the song slows down before the guitars start up again and Lucas tells us that “I had to leave you”. The song finishes with some background ohhs and a refrain of “Are you feeling alone” The band remind of a mix between New Found Glory and You Me At Six. Overall a decent effort, catchy and hard to get out of your head after a few listens

The video which is playing on Lava And Scuzz is interspersed with shots of the band messing around with each other and a live performance of the band playing on a outdoor basketball court. The video matches the song very well in tempo and style, and the switches between scenes are not too often to make you lose track of the song. A good video that is tailored well to the energy of the song.

As well as vocal harmonies being strong point in Pandora’s Box skill set, they are also imaginative with the arrangements of their accompanying instruments. This makes it easy for them to create original sounding songs from the wide variety of music from the pop charts. The Hertfordshire based folk pop band have been creating their own versions of each new UK number one and uploading their performances straight to Youtube. We will be covering each new video as it’s uploaded!

Rihanna Only Girl (In the World)

This cover of the Rihanna hit takes the melody of the original and places it in the completely opposite situation of acoustic folk. Although their line up is minimal, they easily fill the sound with great vocal harmonies, which not only work as background textures but also serve to create strong dynamics.

JLS Love You More

If every JLS song sounded like this version I would defiantly stop ignoring them and in all probability, start buying their music. Until that day I’m happy to settle for the weekly covers from Pandora’s Box. This song sees them taking their usual style of acoustic folk and adding a pinch of Caribbean rhythm to create a much more pleasing song than the original.

Heroes — X Factor Finalists 2010

After another bland uninspiring reworking of classic by the ready meal factory of pop music, it’s great to hear this offering from Pandora’s Box as they perform it with the taste and thought of the original. The excellent vocal harmonies of this cover generate a beautiful yet strong overly to the drums and guitar.

Black Eyed Peas — The Time (Dirty Bit)

Here we see the band taking a different direction from their usual acoustic folk tone and have stayed more inline with the original by adding a synth to their line up. To their credit, they gave melody to the verses instead of rapping, however, it would have been nice if they had ventured a little further from the phonic car crash of the original.

When We Collide — Matt Cardle / Biffy Clyro

Just as in the original, this version starts with vocals and guitar builds with a crescendo towards the chorus. The fact that the line up only consists of guitars, vocals and piano doesn’t mean that the song looses any power over the original.

Rihanna — What’s My Name

This version Rihanna’s hit once again shows of the bands skill with vocal arrangements. Here they have stripped the song right back and given rebuilt it with guitars to give a tranquil folk sound with the slide guitar from guest performer Nico Hayes giving it an original twist.

As you all probably know, Oasis split over a year ago. Since then, people have been waiting anxiously for the next great British band to come along and take over where they left off. But as promising new bands sunk within months, unable to live up to their hype, It was beginning to look as if Oasis really were Britain’s last great band.

For a few of months now, however, whispers have been circulating. Talk of ‘the future of music’, ‘the figurehead of the next movement’ that has arrived like the music world’s messiah. At the centre of all this you’ll find Brother, a band consisting of four guys from Slough who, far from greeting their hype with modesty, are indeed spurring it on.

They infamously opened their first London gig by stating that “If anyone doesn’t want to see the future of music, leave now.” Even if they don’t intend to, they’re doing an extremely good job of dividing opinion. On one end they’ve received glowing reviews, but they’ve also been dismissed as another ‘hype’ band without substance, and snidely referred to as the ‘indie Raygun’ by one journalist. However, the dominating opinion seems to be the first – they’ve already been on the cover of NME, despite having only just entered the limelight. They’ve also signed a rumoured £200,000 deal with Geffen records, so it looks like this band must be the real deal.

You may ask what the future of music actually sounds like. Well, their songs certainly are catchy, and unashamed to be what they are: Britpop. Darling Buds of May is cheery pop, with memorable hooks. It’s destined for radio play, which should be graciously received by those tired of hearing the watered down R&B that seems to haunt us wherever we go. The song is reminiscent of their predecessors, but seeing as Oasis only broke up pretty recently, the ‘revival’ could have come at a better time. Time Machine is better, with a ballsy, rock riff and bolshy vocals. That is, until the chorus kicks us, too similar to all the other radio-friendly rock to be anything revolutionary.

Brother “If anyone doesn’t want to see the future of music, leave now

Brother’s songs would probably be better if they were left raw, rather than boasting their slick production. They lack that amateurish, rough sound that comes hand in hand with real rock n roll, and especially the just-starting rock bands. I’m not saying that the musicians have to be sloppy, but a band that have gone from working dead end jobs and being too skint to afford food to suddenly signing a massive deal after playing a few gigs lacks accessibility. Who will be able to relate to them when their climb to fame can be compared to that of any X-factor winner’s?

I’m sure lots of people will like Brother, and I am not saying that they don’t have talent. I just don’t think it’s possible for the future of music to be a regurgitation of the (fairly recent) past. Musicians always borrow from other eras, but in this case it has been done without much imagination or desire to develop the genre. Yes, they are destined for a career of sold-out shows and success, but will people look back on them in years’ time and regard them as one of the truly original and influential bands? Probably not.

This Surrey-bred band gave us spectacle of happiness at Reading’s Plug ‘n’ Play. Stagecoach are an up and coming British quintet with a US indie sound. Dressed in their skinnies and the T-shirt’s of inspirational bands, they demonstrated the true spirit of Indie.

Lead singer Luca tells us that their main influences sprung from the likes of Wilco, Lemonhead and Teenage fan club; all mainly old 90s rock and even pop! This range of influences and musical tastes was reflected in their entertaining performance.

The band gave us an exciting mixture of sounds: the lead singer’s folky American tone and the use of the mandolin complemented the drums and bass. Though the band was unknown to a lot of the audience, you couldn’t help but celebrate with their music. We got tazers, arguably their most popular song was performed with enthusiasm; the chemistry between the Nick the main singer and Tom playing the mandolin was so comfortable it made the performance very special to watch. The use of the mandolin gave the performance its folk quality. The harsh drum beats and sometimes harsh vocals were tamed by the sweet noise produced by the mandolin.

Stagecoach : power pop for BMX kids

Team-spirit shone during their song Hieroglyphics; with all the members shouting for joy at this simple yet addictive tune; the crowd couldn’t help but dance. Merriment continued as both Nick the guitarist and Tom leapt off the stage during the last song. Tom truly displayed his connection with the crowd by handing over his mandolin to an audience member to play then rushing back on stage to sing. This atmosphere of jolliness completely enhanced the bands performance; though they played at Reading festival during the summer, it was clear that it’s always these small intimate gigs that inspire them to truly let go.

The band kept their playlist short and sweet just like their name. The “power pop for BMX kids” sound contrasts with the mundane name which the band told us sprung from mealy watching the film! All of this aside, Stagecoach definitely gave a performance to remember and we wish them all the best on the rest their tour.

I will come out there and get you dancing.’ The audience looks slightly dumbfounded at this proclamation coming from the Eleven 37’s stage. ‘I’ve got a megaphone and I am prepared to use it.’

Though unsure of a how a megaphone would have assisted Jamie Topp, lead vocalist of the band, with this particular challenge, the determination on his face is undeniable. This crowd is about to start dancing, whether they want to or not.

The nice thing in this case, is that the Eleven 37’s are a band who are going to make you want to dance. They create an incredibly big sound with a beat that surrounds you, gets inside your feet and gets you moving. Singe-handedly recreating the glory days of funk, the Eleven 37’s are bringing some vivacity back to a musical stage dominated with well, normally a bit more of the ‘depressing stuff’. This band is fun, and more than that, funny, dotting their set with some free strawberries, lots of jumping around, and a bit of silly string for good measure. Though the crowd in the pit was small at the beginning of their live set, it slowly grew, as the hesitant became more comfortable and wanted to be close to these guys, wanted to be in the funk for those minutes instead of out in the cold, bar-side and boring.

The super-group that is the combination of Jamie Topp, Luke Tomlinson, Nick Bentley, Ben Dempster, and Sam Dudley, have been together for a few years, discovering their sound and sharpening it into a cohesive funk message in their latest EP. The band name stems from a quick decision, of needing a name, checking a phone, and deciding the contenders were either 11:37 (the time) or Sony Erickson. The time won this tough battle, and the eleven 37’s were born, a band name that does indeed ‘roll off the tongue’ as Jamie suggests.

Wanting to do something different, the band sought to break against a music industry mold, providing a Red Hot Chili Peppers sound that brings to mind a mixture of a smoothed-out Black Keys and a roughed-up version of recent Minus the Bear, all whisked together with the singular flair and humour of these up-and-comer’s.

‘It’s music to make you feel good.’ Says Jamie. Music, as declared in the lyrics to great tune Here Comes the Storm, that makes you happy to be alive. And the band seek to do that at their shows as well as in their records; on a recent six-gig tour they played everything from pubs to venues, even delighting some Chinese tourists with a bridge-top show. They are happy to play, and completely unhesitant to connect with the crowd. It would be hard for most lead singers to get away with getting as up close and personal as Jamie did with the Proud Camden audience, and yet he somehow pulled it off, no one close to flinching as he was in their faces, still jamming, determined to get the atmosphere buzzing.

And buzz it did, aided by the steady beats of Sam Dudley and Luke Tomlinson, who added a layer of depth and soul to the sound of the band, adding that genuine kick to a difficult undertaking, creating honest funk.

The Eleven 37’s make music to make you happy. Music to make you dance. Music to make you mattress surf, get in some sleeping bags and jump around a bit. (Watch the video.) Above all, they make music that from the first guitar grind will have you ready to get funked.

Music, just like life itself, evolves. Moving freely from genre to genre, form to form. In the early years of this decade if you weren’t wearing skinny jeans and a low-cut vest top, hanging round Camden nightclubs, smoking roll-up cigarettes you weren’t a cool band. Countless bands sounding like The Strokes and The Libertines started to emerge and soon took over the whole music scene. But like I said, evolution soon kicked in. From the roll-up cigarette smoke a new type of indie music started to surface, it was more dance-able and had strange beautiful noises, oooh!

I logged on to the online unsigned-music streaming sensation that is Myspace (and a little bit of Facebook) to hear a band from down Essex/Herts way. Misleadingly called The Last Men, this 5 piece Indie electro band comprise of four last men and one last woman and, from what I’ve heard, are making fantastic music!

So what have this new, cool band got to do with that old-timer rant you had at the beginning of the article? I hear you shout. Well, their music is a new twist on that danceable-indie loveliness we’re used to from bands such as Bloc Party and MGMT which is the way indie music started to go. I only got to hear two tracks up on their profile, the track Napalm dream offered everything in the way of effect-filled guitar and fast rhythm that gets your head bobbing and although it was well written and well produced it wasn’t anything I hadn’t heard before. But before I discarded them as another band joining the dance-indie movement a few years too late, I listened to their other track they have available The Cycle, which really made me sit up and listen. Following this up with a video on their Youtube page of a live performance of the song New Life I started to see The Last Men as very accomplished songwriters and musicians with an interesting sound that I’m starting to love.

The Last Men could be Fantastic! I wanna hear some more!

I can see they are really interested in writing good music. I can see obvious influences, bands such as Bloc Party, maybe a hint of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs but also influence from legendary songwriters such as Bruce Springsteen. Their songs have this delightful way of drawing you in before erupting into an explosion of sound. They’re a promising band with brilliant song-writing skill. A quality that has also been noticed by Absolute radio and BBC introducing radio – just a couple of places The Last Men can boast about having their music played.

They’re doing everything right for the current music environment, they’ve found a new interesting sound and manage to perform it better than most bands I’ve heard of this nature. They’re promoting themselves well, with professional photoshoots and online presence. With the opportunity of playing on larger stages with some bigger names I think The Last Men could be Fantastic! I wanna hear some more!

And yet it’s really hard to find a girl band who I genuinely like, as most suddenly become a bit annoying when they broach the ‘girl power’ boundary and become irritatingly fashionable. I was a big fan of the Like until recently, when the big eyes, eyeliner, and adorable pixie haircuts that no one except celebrities seem to be able to pull off in real life, got old.

However, with the Vivian Girls, everything seems delightfully new, while simultaneously expounding an old-school nostalgia that makes them likeable. And there’s a bit of punk angst to keep things fresh; the girls are a mix of sweet and sassy, they make you smile without being cringey. In other words, I like them, but they aren’t going to make me go ‘awwww’ as if they are a girl band made of squirrels, because they are cheeky enough that they would throw a cannon of nuts at me for doing so.

The songs are a great mix of California vibes and underground punk inspiration; it’s easy listening with balls. Moped Girls and Tell the World were the standout hits for me, but their other singles and first two studio albums (Vivian Girls and Everything Goes Wrong) are definitely worth a listen. They are currently working on a new album, Share the Joy, due for release by Polyvinyl Records in Spring 2011, which, judging by their previous releases, should be excellent indeed.

The girls are already on their way to becoming indie darlings, and no doubt their hometown of Brooklyn has an impact on their impeccable image, where they are undoubtedly, very cool. Cute, relatable, and talented, what more can I say, they won me over. Go go Vivian Girls!

In fact, what makes this release a special one, is that 100 copies of the EP will be given away free by Thomas to his fans, via <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Thomas-Hedley/401735097488?" target"_blank">Facebook.

The EP will be ready by the end of September, featuring the new single Turn Off The Lights, which is already play-listed as one of the top songs on the main local radio stations, and was produced by <a href="http://www.independent.com.mt/news.asp?newsitemid=83832" target"_blank">Boris Cezek in Malta and <a href="http://www.discogs.com/artist/Daniel+Pursey" target"_blank">Dan Pursey who also mixed the track in the UK.

Boris is a do-it-all, play-it-all producer, one of the best on the island. Dan is a top mixing sound engineer with 44 worldwide no.1’s, 8 in the USA. Most recently he had 2 number ones in the UK with <a href="http://www.thewantedmusic.com/" target"_blank">The Wanted and <a href="http://www.jlsofficial.com/gb/" target"_blank">JLS. His credits include Westlife — 6 Albums, <a href="http://www.ildivo.com/" target"_blank">Il Divo, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, <a href="http://www.thesaturdays.co.uk/" target"_blank">The Saturdays and Susan Boyle, whose debut album sold in excess of 8 million copies in the first 6 weeks and currently he is recording her second album.

Thomas has developed a fresh pop-rock style, with a retro 80s feel, by using the contrast of his unique voice and underlying synth sounds. This sound and feel is currently undergoing a big revival, with the success made by bands like <a href="http://www.thekillersmusic.com/" target"_blank">The Killers, and more recently, <a href="http://www.laroux.co.uk/" target"_blank">Laroux. His sound has gone from guitar-based pop-rock, to a more elaborate mix of synths and guitar riffs.

The EP will also feature a new version of Thomas’ hit of this summer, That’s What You Are, and has benefitted from the mixing talents of Pursey in the UK. The track topped the local radio charts and is still being played very frequently. The EP will revisit the song My First Love, originally released in 2007, also refined by Pursey. Thomas has also begun work on a music video, which will to be ready by the end of October.

Do you find yourself missing the past days of the young Britney? Longing for a bottled-genie Christina or maybe you find sanctuary with the more recent Kelly Clarkson? If you have an open relationship with those innocent pop days, or perhaps their more so your guilty pleasure, either way Steph Horne fits the bill, incorporating features of those more innocent styles of music into her sound and appearance.

In songs such as Let’s Not Break Up, the young Britney style oozes from the very beginning notes and in Strange we get the ‘Dirrty’ Christina gene that she breeds into her music.

If a new ‚original, unique sound is what you are searching for its not what you will find with Steph, however if you yearn of the days of pop gone by, then I would definitely insist you check this girl out.

Steph may have an old-school pop sound but strangely in its familiarity is its uniqueness, as Steph seems to be one of the few artists embracing the old fashioned pop style in today’s rap and metal world.

Oops! she did it again some might say, I’d say she did it again but there is nothing oops about this girl and her brilliantly nostalgic-inducing style of music.

Be sure to check out her sound.

Claiming to be a ‘High energy fusion of post punk, cockney, rock, rap with a flavour of drum of bass’, We Buy Gold seem to cover a large spectrum of the music genre. It is not until you actually hear any of their material, that you cannot seem to categorise them into fitting into one specific genre yet they do relate to all that they claim. Their unique sound and humorous lyrics, determine that they may be compared to the likes of GLC, yet the awkward and mismatched sound of We Buy Gold establishes them as having an incredibly original sound.

Ron’s Room seems to let the listener know what the band is about with the first vocals of the song. Craig’s vocals and ability to switch pitch and sound so easily means that the track is irritatingly contagious and you cannot help but tap your foot to the bass line. The repetitive ‘Open the room Ron, What’s in the room Ron’ forms the basic lyrical chorus set up. It may not have had as many plays as their other tracks on Myspace but Ron’s Room compiles a pick ‘n mix of sound, tone, pitch and tempo and manages to create a track that shouldn’t work….but does!

Spanish Beats Remastered has a very different tone to Ron’s Room. The musical talent and ability throughout the four members of the band is evident in this track. The diversity and skills used, makes and gives this track a traditional Spanish essence mixed with punk vocals. It has a stereotypical Spanish sound in parts yet We Buy Gold bring in a sense of comedy, accenting ‘Senorita’!

A different sound can be found in Jack Little Demo. This messy track makes it difficult to hear Craig’s muddled lyrics but this emphasises how as a band they capture and mix punk with drum and bass, rock and rap. Although you cannot decipher each word, the song seems to project a state of disillusion. Drug fuelled lyrics such as: ‘so many high people’ allows Craig to create a sense of instability through his irregular sound. The last thirty seconds of the song, indicates a transition and gives the song a finale.

High energy fusion of post punk, cockney, rock, rap with a flavour of DnB

Thuggery seems to propose itself as the track to allow listeners to know what We Buy Gold are all about. Vocally being likened to Johnny Rotten, Craig determines the bands punk credibility with this track. Lyrics such as: ‘Oh fuck, the dirty bastards’ and the eponymous and rather genius Thuggery heard throughout the track gives it a cockney rude boy modern attachment that many people can relate to.

Lady of the Manor is a mysterious track unveiling the thoughts of secret admirer. The track has a fairly fast tempo and opens with: ‘a lady of distinction, just to watch her move, is my addiction’. This track is quite irregular with the vocals becoming erratic at about 1.50– this expressing the mindset of the admirer maybe? Although this may be the case the sheer expression used in this track means that it is comical!

Lost and Found is a self-explanatory track expressing the tale of being lost and becoming found in London. Expressing conclusions and illusions throughout the song and using the repetitive ‘lost and found’ with clashing symbols and guitar riffs can seem to express the stress of being lost. The song concludes with ‘lost and found’ being sung and echoing as if being lost through a tunnel. It is an effective technique and works on this track as it is so different to the tone set throughout.

We Buy Gold do have a gritty sound and are able to mash together genres and sounds that typically should not work. Their individuality needs to be credited and if you are in London town on 11th June, head down to Arch 635 in Clapham to see if the band who claim to buy gold are actually worth the weight.

Basics first: Who are you, and why should people tune in to one of your gigs?

Hello, Hello, Hello we’re French Crops, we are a five piece band based in South East London (Eltham, Welling). We have been going for about a year and a half now, and have constantly been gigging and writing material. The band sets shape with Loui on guitar, Ciaran on guitar, Joe on bass, Chris on drums and myself Jack on vocals. We all come from ok towns, I say ok, because you do get the rough ends, but then you get the rough ends everywhere. We are also still very young and beautiful.

When and why did you form the band?

French Crops started when me, Joe and Ciaran were in school and just some random day, decided to form a band, don’t ask why!
So we got ourselves some instruments and started banging away at it. After about a couple of weeks of jamming, we brought Chris in on drums and then a few months after that brought in Loui, Joe’s older brother who had previously been in a few other bands in college and that. Month after this we got our first gig up at New Cross with a few big bands and it went off a stormer with good feedback from people and a nice vibe of being on stage, so we decided to take it serious, and well: here we are today.

So you've decided to focus on your music, do you still have day time jobs or do you focus all your energy on the band now?

Well we do all try and focus on the band as much as possible, but yeah, we do have jobs: me, Joe and Loui are labourers, and Ciaran and Chris are both at college.

Why "The French Crops"?

This question has to be the most asked question we get! And so to solve this mystery: about a week before our first show in New cross, we didn’t have a name, and we knew telling the promoter we didn’t have a name would look bad. So while practicing, I was going on about getting my haircut and I said something about getting a French Crop. And from that day on, we’ve been known as French Crops, and we seem to get good comments about that.

I can see you have a bunch of "inspirations", what is so fantastic about them?

Yeah, we have loads of different inspirations for music, from Ian Dury to Michael Jackson, and Red Hot Chili Peppers to Eminem. We’ve grown up being fans of different music, Ciaran getting the nickname 2pac in school and I remember experiencing some horrid moments. For example; Channel 4’s Popworld gig, with the likes of Busted and Westlife. A very f*****g scary moment in a young man’s life.
But as a band we do all feel that the music in the past has been a lot better than what it is today, but there are some amazing bands out, like Kasabian, The Cribs, etc.

inspirations for our songs come from everyday life

What decade, according to you, came up with the best music?

By far late 70’s and 80’s. It was the times of The Specials, Madness, Squeeze and so on.

Any all time favourite songs?

I’m stuck between three tunes, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. Bob Marley, Three Little Birds and Red Hot Chili Peppers, Can’t Stop. Probably have to go with the man, Bob.

Where do you find inspiration for songs?

The inspirations for our songs come from everyday life, and whatever we seem to get up to. Where we live, you could experience a lot from just having a quiet drink on a Wednesday night or a casual stroll down the highstreet. A lot of our songs that have been written have been about nights out, people we know, and quite a few birds. Names I cannot say.……

What's the best thing about gigging? Where's the best places to do it, small venues or bigger ones?

The best thing about gigging for me is the buzz you get when you get up on stage, and play your music to the public. Even if it’s a small venue in the cold, wet ends of Deptford or a sunny, hot festival stage in Chelmsford, that feeling is just with ya when you’re up there.

Plans for the near future?...

Erm, we plan to release our first E.P at the beginning of the summer, and at this moment we are going into the studio to record that. So we’re all looking forward to that, and get that out there to the public.

We’ve been speaking to a few record labels as well, so things are looking very bright!

We make sure we are gigging all over the place as well. Hopefully we will be sorting out a few gigs up North and down South, so keep your eyes peeled UK! The festivals in the summer, we are also looking very forward to.

... and in the long term?

Getting a record deal and getting some amazing albums out there basically.

The list of inspirations that Jack gives in this interview is a severely cut-down version from the one on The French Crops MySpace page, so be sure to head that way to get the full list and have a listen to their songs.

All their songs has the distinctive mark of The Cure, The Clash, Eric Clapton and so on, in that they all have a great rhythm, a great feel and basically does the trick: you just want to hear more from these five talented guys.

The guitar work of Ciaran must be applauded, especially on tracks like Take It Back and his use of the wah wah pedal on Mr Milage, the latter reminding me of Cream’s White Room and I never make that connection lightly!

The Cure make their present felt on Big Boy Back Stabber with an amazing bassline with traces back to The Lovecats but The French Crops add more of a rock feel to this track, which also has traces to The Streets with the singing and lyrics. Better Off This Way and Clearly Now are straight forward pop/rock tracks, but in that glorious stage where it makes you want to dance and forget all the troubles you may have.

So who would benefit from going to see this band? Well, I think I can safely say that it’s energy filled, and conveys a passion for great rock music and promises to be a good night out.

Age are an unsigned U.K. five piece band from Evesham, in the Midlands. I’ve been listening to four tracks, two from their current five track EP Useless Souvenirs which is available on iTunes and two from their forthcoming EP due out summer 2010.

They are, without a doubt, an extremely tight Hard/Alternative rock centered group who play together like they’ve been doing it for years.

Their mastery of doubling parts, timing and syncopation is on par with any of the old Prog Rock bands but somehow reminds me of a murderously tight Metalica gig I saw in ’87, though they definitely stop short of the purely Heavy Metal mark. Instead, Dave Draper and Olly Edkins’ heavy guitar parts are complemented by more subtle touches, interplays and accents. Working well together, they manage to achieve a layered guitar dominance without any egotistical or unnecessary shredding either. That’s not an easy task. Stu Lister’s well delivered vocals are clear, nonabrasive and mercifully devoid of the anger and angst that could so easily accompany a Hard Rock sound these days. The choruses are extremely catchy as well. Ronnie Emms’ drumming stands out noticeably for its perfect timing and excellent fills, as does the synergy between him and Elly Ellison on bass. The two lay down a very solid structure indeed. Add to this a professional production sound and you have all the ingredients for commercial success and critical acclaim.

I can see Age’s music being well received on both sides of the Atlantic, particularly the college radio and rock stations in the States where the guitar still reigns supreme. The tracks Best Kept Secret, Your Last Day, Useless Souvenirs and Little Deceiver are cross platform and genre — appealing to any Hard Rock/Alternative/Indie/Soft to Heavy Metal fan base. I could see them playing Glastonbury, Reading or Monsters of Rock and fitting in well. A tour of U.S. college towns wouldn’t go amiss either.

In short, if you’re looking to discover a new group of highly talented rock musicians with catchy songs and a youthful though mature sound — this is it. If you listen to anything from bands like Arctic Monkeys, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, The Panic Channel, Linkin Park or possibly Kasabian, you should give Age a listen.

group of highly talented rock musicians with catchy songs

Based upon wide commercial appeal, technical virtuosity, song crafting and production values I give Age a 9/10 and recommend their EP Useless Souvenirs to any one who fits the above description.

My only critique of this band is also a compliment. Judging by their undeniable technical competence and virtuosity I’m getting the feeling that they are actually holding something back or playing it safe. What they’ve produced is aimed at commercial success and I can not blame them — but you will not hear anything you haven’t heard before here despite its impeccable execution and potential mass appeal. I don’t think they’ve shown all their cards though and I’m going to wait and see what else they have in store musically speaking. I’m curious to see what they’ll come out with when they feel comfortable enough to let their inner muses run free. Can they rise to that ineffable level of greatness? Can they define a unique sound and call it their own as so few bands ever achieve? All the ingredients are there in my opinion and should not be wasted.

Hip Hop is scarce in Jacksonville and this has inspired Mavrique also known as Kidd to produce his own songs to give his community more variety of the music world and his contribution to it.

Influenced as early as the age of 5 by the Hip Hop scene, Mavrique got really serious in the music world by the age of nine, which brought him to study the great and the Legends of the music world, which brought Mavrique to write his own beats.

Mavriques main influence came from “Nasir Bin Olu Dara Jones”, Queen Latifah and Outkast, Mavrique is also son to a Jazz musician, also his mother and grandmother have given him ultimate strengths and he remarks that they are the two strongest women on the planet, making Mavrique dedicate himself to the point where he will “never give up”.

Mavrique has produced a very realistic album and the majority of the material comes from personal and emotional experiences. The album all in all has a great rhythm and flow which is easy on the ears. As Mavrique grows with his music and in confidence the lyrics and vocals will strengthen. The album has an old school hip hop edge to it and is enjoyable, laid back, with a lively vibe. It is well worth a listen.

The album all in all has a great rhythm and flow, which is easy on the ears

Mavrique is currently working on his mix tape series which is due out in March called 20 years and is hopeful in obtaining his first deal in the summer this year.

The Album’s Highlights:

Ill in the Ville was the most challenging song on the album, the first of the two slower tracks, producing something that Mavrique’s city could be proud To Bump in The Whip. Whilst maintaining lyrical status, this song is one of the strongest on the album, with great backing vocals and a good rich catchy flow to it.

Get On My Vibe being the song with the most impact, just of the beat alone, the flow and the lyrics fit this song perfectly, with insane punch lines this song was produced for radio play, and the only song that didn’t contain cursing or radical slurs, and was more based around realness, Which carries its own style.

Download the Genesis Mix Tape

Visit Mavrique’s myspace page for more information or download the mix tape series from the Genesis Mix Tape Website.

I Miss Yall this is another rich song with catchy soft edges with a great flow to it. The second of the slower vibe songs, that never seem to wear on you and has been a two year anthem contribution, with another song with good backing vocals and rhythm this song really get’s the crowd.

We will survive a good mix of vocal reflecting on life and how to survive and how his people stay alive. A very good beat and strong word content, lyrics of love, respect, appreciation of death and reputation. An expressive and balanced song sung from life experiences.

A gangsters way a gangster rapping track of an emotional story of two students. This track is again expressive and true to life about a high school shooting, kids killing kids.Strong content describing what life is coming too, very realistic song, with real news content added. This rap song has been written with true feeling and is dedicated to those two students.

Led by the loud rough vocals of lead singer Justin Tranter, his voice is prominent over the mash up of guitars, loud drums and bass. But don’t worry, it sounds great!

They are a garage rock band that is all about the visual. It’s not just their music, it’s their look, their performance live that make them what they are. They are entertaining to watch and really get into their performance, bringing the crowd with them. They know how to get people’s attention and then keep it-how can you keep your eyes of the band members, pretending (I think) to take each other out on stage!

Talented, they stay active throughout each song, but Tranter never forgets the audience by keeping them entertained, shocking them and making them laugh through his (almost) taboo x-rated nature! They are certainly ready for the limelight so find them on MySpace and their EP is available at www.semipreciousweapons.com I recommend if you’re aged sixteen and over!

I’m sure you’ve heard of Alphabeat but where have they been for a while? After their major success in 2008, Alphabeat seemed to slowly fade away until we found new “fascinations.” But they seem to be back by supporting Lady Gaga on her UK tour. It’s not a major comeback, considering that they were the ones with support acts two years ago, but they are back anyway and personally I’m really happy about it! I was desperate to see them live in 2008 but was unable to. Now I can!

They bring with them a second brand new single from their second album, The Beat is… The single, Hole In My Heart doesn’t sound as upbeat at the start as what you’re used to with Alphabeat but soon picks up the pace and you realise that their sound may have changed ever so slightly. Once an 80’s influenced pop band, the band from Denmark has signed to a new label since their last major success and their new single has a slightly more “dance” feel to it. But don’t worry they are still the same Alphabeat! So I look forward to any more singles from their new album that is soon to come.
