NBM Artists Profile — Turrentine Jones

Purveyors of trebley riffs, tube driven Hammond organs and the odd sleazy guitar solo; Turrentine Jones have forged a sexy, modern blues sound. “It’s honest, it’s raw with swirling organ parts, rapid fire percussion and rousing harmonies” – 4Q MAGAZINE.

Influenced by the likes of the The Animals and The Doors – Turrentine Jones have built an underground fanbase through near-constant touring of small clubs, frequent demo releases and music festival appearances, and brand endorsements.

The three-piece band (lead singer and guitarist Julian Neville, drummer Chris Carcamo and Hammond organist Thomas Scotson) have been rewarded for their hard work over the course of this year. Le Début, their first two-track release found its place in the charts after its February 2012 release. From this record, the single Slam the Door reached No. 13 on the Australian Music Charts, and was televised after the band performed live on Channel 4’s Hit the Road Jack programme.

Founding member Julian Neville “escaped the scene” in his native Australia from touring with his original band alongside several artists including; David Knopfler of Dire Straits and Colin Hay of Men at Work. In his own words “I gave myself too many distractions and felt I wasn’t getting anywhere — Just blasting and laughing my way through the time. It was great. I had fun. But I needed a release.” — Which lead his musical journey onwards to Manchester, England.

Their distinctive sound has earned praise from radio presenters SHAUN KEAVENY (BBC 6) “Very Booker T & the MGs…! I quite like it!” and DANIELLE PERRY (Q Radio), amongst others, with an emphatic vocal that has drawn comparisons to the likes of Mick Jagger and Eric Burdon.

Building on the release of their third single Show Me Mercy, the band signed an endorsement deal with clothing brand OK Now and inked a deal with touring agency Spoilt Kid, which already houses the likes of Mike Joyce (The Smiths), Clint Boon (Inspiral Carpets), Bez (Happy Mondays) and Drew McConnell (Babyshambles/The Vaccines).

Recently Turrentine Jones picked up two awards at the Exposure Music Awards ceremony in London for Best Blues Act and Best Male Act. The three-piece were one of only two bands to receive double honours.

NBM Artists Profile — Boy Set Sail

Boy Set Sail are a 4 piece pop-rock band from Newport, South Wales. The band started in late 2010 and includes members from previous Newport based band – Take the floor. With influences from established artists such as New Found Glory, Four Years Strong and The Rocket Summer they have created a unique style which will please all. The Reserve have recently signed to I am Mighty Records who are planning to release their forthcoming EP in the summer of 2011. The boys look to embark on numerous UK tours in the months to come so keep your eyes peeled and be sure to get to a show.

Alpha380 started in 2009 as 2 members, Alex Pinay and his brother Andrew Pinay. They are influenced by Angels and Airwaves, Blink 182, Ke$ha, Owl City and have similar sounds to them. Their instruments consist of electronic beats with synthesizers, However they still add guitars and drums into the mix to give it a move diverse and punk/emo pop sound.

Alpha380’s lead single off of this new CD Satellite is titled Tonight, Tonight. This song is the first track off of this EP and it is also a good indication as to the direction that Alpha380 is taking. It has a very playful dance beat to it with catchy lyrics inspired by punk rock. The recording aspect of this song was done with perfection. Every note is crisp and alive with a very creative guitar riff in the bridge that sends this song into the stratosphere. It is considered Alpha380’s flagship song as it captures the essence of who this group really is. This song, as are all of their songs, is very relatable, memorable and sustainable in this music industry.

This EP was released on August 27, 2010 in its digital format on iTunes. There are also plans to re-release it in its physical format. Alpha380 is planning to release a follow up EP in the Spring of 2011 and a full length CD in the winter of 2011/2012

NBM Artists Profile — Arizona Bay

Whilst this statement is neither a review of Leeds’ leading grunge revivalists, nor perhaps a clear indication of their musical style, it serves its purpose as something of a mission statement for the band. A call to arms, to rally against the mass consumerist culture that plagues the music scene at large today.

The Leeds based four piece consists of Rhys Williams (vocals/guitar), Sam Wood (guitar), Rob Carruthers (drums) and Oli Tsakonas (bass). Hailing from all four corners of the country the band came together whilst all four members were studying at Music college in Leeds. Whilst as individuals they find their inspirations in an eclectic range of musical styles — from Classic Rock (Led Zepellin, The Who) to 70s Punk (The Clash, The Ramones), from Heavy Metal (Black Sabbath) to Grunge (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden) — they immediately recognised each other as kindred spirits, brought together by a shared love of Rock music that is played from the heart. The band took their name from the seminal and controversial comedian Bill Hicks, who rallied against consumerism throughout his career and exhorted the importance of truth within art, something the band also strive to achieve in everything they do.

The past year has seen the group moving from strength to strength, with charismatic live performances of both original material and reworkings of unsung rock classics. Their debut release, an 8 track eponymous EP of original material, showcases their constantly maturing songwriting style, as well as the energy and passion they’ve become famous for in their live performances. Due for national release in November and with a tour to follow the band invite you to watch this space…

NBM Artists Profile — Si-Anne

Si-Anne is an up & coming Johannesburg, South African-based, Pop / Rock singer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist signed to the London-based Saratoga Entertainment Group.

2010 finalist on South African Idol, a spin-off of the now world-famous television British format, which has spawned many mainstream acts, Si-Anne is also a theatre major, and has starred in numerous productions such as Roll Over Beethoven, Glory Days, and DIVA.

Si-Anne studied contemporary popular music at the National School Of Arts and graduated cum laude as Student Of The Year (2002), also recieving the Best Bass Guitarist Award.

Her majors were vocals and bass guitar, a multi-talented vocalist, and instrumentalist in her own right, Si-Anne also plays guitar, and the keyboards, as well as being a strong songwriter.

Having toured internationally with critically-acclaimed performances in Dubai, and Mauritius, coupled with star guest slots on renowned South African Pop / Rock radio stations such as Home Brew 94.1FM, Si-Anne is currently doing a lot of live promo work on the South African entertainment circuit in preparation for her upcoming debut album Celebrity.

Tonight, will be the 1st track off that upcoming debut, be on the lookout for Si-Anne, and her SI-ANNE PROJECT BAND on the UK shores in the near future.
