JC Harnell’s CTLG: Calm, Composed & Electric

JC Harnell is an electronic composer with an edge. His chilled and tranquil tunes are the soundtrack to walking down an endless sandy beach with the bright sunshine in the sky, not a soul in sight, not a care in the world.
July of this year saw the release of his first full-length EP, CTLG, which boasts 21 […]

Ozone Baby- Girl with Cassettes

Their namesake gives away an element of their style, as this dynamic group from Eastbourne take inspiration from said ‘70s band, blending it amongst softer indie […]

Diana Vickers, Leadmill, Sheffield, Monday 17th May

Oh Diana Vickers. One of the many Marmites of the music world. Some of you may be able to hark back to the X Factor days, a competition in which the self-named “The Vickerage” ranked 4th in the final. Wooing some with her youthful, bare-footed, messy-blonde-haired, rasping-voiced naivety and sending others running […]

Tuning In Part 1 told you (true) tales of a Sheffield band in the making A band made up of the charismatic Andy, Brett, Olly and Todd– an acoustic–rock style group easing their way onto the quirky scene of Sheffield music. Tuning In: Part 1

Trailing Anonymous:

I am excited! Why? Because rumour has it that four especially talented and high-spirited, Sheffield-based gents are setting out to bring about a musical collaboration that will finally take their mutual musical dreams to a place not far from reality. The talent has been sought, the song-writing has started and this yet to be named band […]

One Quiet Night….Charlie Winston:

UK Album Launch– Monday 28th September

Walking into Cargo, a charming venue in the chic London borough of Shoreditch, everything about the place screamed style, Charlie Winston Style. Small in size yet big in character, the intimacy and flair of the dimly lit bar-restaurant created a friendly atmosphere with a touch of excited suspense. Off-the-beaten-track, stylish and inviting– the […]

Every Step: Chatting to Charlie

Charlie Winston Interview– 23/07/2009
The first time I saw Charlie Winston live, his open and candidly charming character unveiled to me a great depth in what he had to offer both musically and as an all-round entertainer. Quirky, vibrant, “stylishly styled” and with a raw, authentic talent that is atypical of today’s musical landscape.
Charlie Winston is an acoustic […]

Author Bio - Hannah Hassack

I am 23 years old and for as long as I can remember I have written things down, whether it be in a diary, a letter or a short story, it’ always been the way I best express myself and for me it’s a massive stress buster.
I’ve only been writing music reviews for about a year, when I finished my degree in English Literature, missed writing and wanted to write about something I care about. For me to write, I need a purpose, and what better way than to chat about the musicians, artists and bands who I appreciate and want other people to hear about.
My absolute favourite artist is Charlie Winston, who I found when pretty much stalking his brother Tom Baxter (another musical delight) around the UK. Not only does Charlie’s music strike a chord with me in many ways, but when I interviewed him last summer (read it here!) I found him to be the most charming, down to earth person. Chatting to him has most definitely been my Newbeats highlight.
The most exciting band I’ve had the opportunity to review, when I attended their unplugged gig in Earls Court, has to be Harrison Hope.  The lead singer offers an amazing amount of potential and I really really want them to succeed. I’m going to continue to shout about them until they do…
I sometimes feel like I don’t know what I’m talking about, but for as long as people read my reviews and like them, I will continue to tell the world about my opinions and passions when it comes to music.
I work as a full-time PR co-ordinator the rest of the time for a fantastic company in Sheffield, and I find that the little bit of writing I do in this job tides me over until my next Newbeats article/review. Eventually, though, I want to be a full on journalist, writing about music, travel and all the things that make me happy in the world.
