Morning Parade : More Than Just A Support

Opening for such an influential indie band as The Wombats is a difficult task, yet Essex-five piece Morning Parade took on this challenge effortlessly and set exceptionally high standards last night at the O2 Academy.

Never before, have I witnessed a support band warm up an audience so swiftly and with such enthusiasm and ease. With previous gigs, supporting bands such as Feeder and Ash, they are no beginners when it comes to playing alongside legendary acts.

Their sound was epic and filled the entire venue with a contagious rhythmic air and within minutes the crowd was engaged in dance and clapping as though they were performing in unison with the band. Every song was as powerful as the previous, combining trance-style synths and anthemic rock with an energetic stage presence to create the perfect live performance.

“Whenever we write something, we ask ourselves, ‘Can you see 100,000 people singing this back to you?’ If not, we get rid of it,” the band told the Guardian in 2010. This song writing strategy was evident throughout as Steve Sparrows soaring vocals and catchy lyrics were just begging to be mirrored back. Heavy rock guitar riffs played by guitarist Chad Thomas were skilfully synergised with Andy Hayes’s dance-like drumbeats to contribute to their acclaimed rave-rock genre.

Debut single Under the Stars (Recognisable from TV series, The Vampire Diaries) provided a strong introduction to the set that suggested influences of Muse and Friendly Fires but still maintained an original and niche edge. Recent single A&E also provoked the audience into chanting back the catchy chorus lyrics, “This is not an accident, this is no emergency!”
