Bruno Mars – Grenade
Bruno Mars’ 2nd UK single from the Album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, has gone straight to number one in the charts. This is a rather impressive feat for the 25 year old pop/r&b singer songwriter. Especially considering that it is somewhat inferior to his previous works Just the Way You Are and the even better The other side featuring Cee Lo Green. Let’s just hope that this is a temporary dip in quality.
Ok that may be a bit harsh, this song isn’t complete rubbish. I mean the production is pretty good if you like that sort of thing. The drum track takes an innovative break from the traditional pop sounds with its tribal rhythm. The vocal talents of Bruno are top quality and the dynamics of the record give the perfect rises and falls to keep you from skipping to the next track. I just wish they had worked a little bit harder on the lyrics and melody, you know the actual bits that make up a song. Constant repetition of inane clichés followed by a weak chorus of obvious rhymes is no way to sell records. Oh no wait, it turns out it is!
This is the real thing that picks my potatoes. Radio 1 can play a mediocre song seven hundred times a day and drive it’s sales straight to number one whilst it snubs a lot of other music which is arguably much better, purely because its “not what the listeners want.” Fair enough I suppose, carry on…
In summary, Bruno Mars is great. Some of his songs are much better than others but buy them all anyway because the radio said so.
