Black City Review
Debut album from Danish band Black City combines great rhythms, clever production and catchy tunes, that will have you humming a long, long time after you’ve had your first taste of these four guys!
First track on their album (which is also their first single) is a straightforward rocker called Summertime and a perfect introduction to their music: it’s rocking, it’s got a great hook and has a constant rotation on radio stations in Denmark.
Front singer Bjørn Poulsen’s vocal strength can clearly be heard in In The Arms Of Myself and the only negative thing to be said about this track is that the vocal is a bit too buried in the mix in the chorus, it would have been nice to have it more up front as in the verse. Instead we are treated to some brilliant guitar work from lead guitarist Kristian Klærke, which is superb on all the tracks, carrying the melody along and weaving in and out of the rhythm guitar.
The One You Sacrifice is quite a clever song, with lyrics such as ”I’ll take a drink of your volcano just to be the one you sacrifice” and the song, would be an excellent second single, but the album’s got quite a few of those!
Possibly one of my favourite tracks on the album is the sexually charged Get On Me, the title need no more explanation, but the song is a great mix of amazing guitar, clever rhythm section work from drummer Jakob Hansen and bassist Thorleik Mortensen, and some vocal work and lyrics that are just mesmerising.
This brilliant track is followed by the standard, Eleanor Rigby of modern bands; a song about a lonely girl and her everyday life: Every Night ticks all the right boxes for this particular category of song, and with it’s rocking melody line and a brilliant chorus, you can’t help but sing a long at the top of your lungs.
The rest of the album is solid rock with some punk thrown in for good measure, and the music resembles The Foo Fighters in high energy and tracks that just, quite simply, works.
So head along to the band’s myspace, where you can check out their music video for Summertime and listen to The One You Sacrifice.
The album is out now on Universal and can be purchased from iTunes.
